Election Night Speech Text

Fauzan Afandi during Election Night, June 15th 2009

Good evening everyone.
First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the election organizing committee, my friends, and my loyal supporters. Thank you for your willingness to come here and carry out your responsibility as the members of ATUSA.
GET MORE WITH FAUZAN. MORE Flexibility, MORE Enjoyment, and MORE Connectivity, that is my slogan. I believe, with these three MOREs, we can bring ATUSA to a higher level of excellence.
Through the concept ‘MORE Flexibility’, I promise that ATUSA will be more appealing after this. Flexible committee is the key of this element. By using this approach, the committee for every ATUSA-organized event will be more flexible, thus enabling everyone to have a chance to lead. Therefore, everyone can unleash their hidden leadership skills, under my MORE Flexibility concept.
The next concept is MORE Enjoyment. I will bring in more enjoyment into ATUSA. This can be achieved by organizing many activities that everyone can join. There will be food hunt trips, charity trips, and last but not least, Jom Balik Kampung program. Food hunt trip enables us to get the taste of rich variety of Malaysian food while Jom Balik Kampung program enables us to know each other more. These activities will be made flexible, where everyone, juniors and seniors can join. This can promote unity among us, ATUSA members. Thus, we can have more enjoyment while we learn more. Believe me, there is a lot more lessons to be learned outside from the class.
The third and final concept is MORE Connectivity. There are two key elements in this concept, which are connecting seniors and juniors and linking them to ATUSA by any means. By having more open-participation events such as academic seminars for juniors, which is guided by seniors, we can actually connect the juniors and seniors. Besides that, I will also ensure everyone is linked with ATUSA by setting up a website for keeping the members up-to-date with the latest information. Besides, a Facebook group will be set up for your added convenience.
I hope I have explained enough on the concepts. Actually, there are many programs that are in my mind now, especially those which I have mentioned just now. Those planned activities can’t be successfully organized without the help of all of you here.
My greatest leadership challenge was when I was in charge as chief editor for my school magazine. Being a chief editor did not give me a full page of speech alone. Instead, I had to sacrifice my study time and end-of-year holiday to finish up editing process due to various constraints. The hard lesson that I have learned is being someone in a high post does not necessarily make you happy. It’s about serving people. That is why I am here, to serve my best to all of you here!
I also realize that to be a good president, I should be capable of doing many things.  Throughout my experience of a committee member for numerous events since my high school days, I have done a great range of task levels, from an ordinary technician in a ceremony to a chairman for my school’s Form 4 orientation program.
I have spent a great time with all of you here, and I hope our memories will last forever. Through the new ATUSA administration, I hope all of ATUSA members can unite and give support to anyone that has the mandate of the voters tonight. I shall pledge my support towards whoever that gets elected tonight. Last but not least, I hope all of us will work together in order to ensure a bright future for ATUSA.
Thank you.

Notes:
ATU Students Association (ATUSA) is a student body comprising of about 300 students from various geographical, ethnic and religious background under American Degree Foundation Program (ADFP) and American Credit Transfer Program (ACTP). Being the only organization that represents everyone in ADFP and ACTP program, ATUSA takes care of student-organized activities and their welfare. ATUSA presidency and all other posts are offered for all of its members. Students are given equal and fair opportunity to present themselves as the most credible person to lead the organization. Diversity within ATUSA itself prevents its election from being just a popularity contest among the candidates.

“Jom Balik Kampung” program

Jom Balik Kampung is a trip to/from INTEC students’ hometown. Few months ago, inspired by Niro, I started a pact among my friends to go back to our hometown during mid-semester holiday.
Everyone can join the Jom Balik Kampung program!
Last time, I only started with a few friends of mine. Finally, we’ve made it. 11 persons in one coach! Sitting next to each other. WE have fun until the end of the journey.

Fun Fun Fun

I know that there are many INTEC students who really ‘allergic’ towards KTM Train. “Slow, unreliable, and not comfortable”, they said. I have to admit that those facts are true, but believe me, going back by train is very fun because of the following reasons:
  1. You can chat all-night-long (make sure your voice is not loud enough) if you use economy class/second class-seating.
  2. You can go to toilet anytime you want.
  3. You can have a small kenduri together with your friends on the train! You buy your own food before you board the train.
  4. After months of camwhoring around the shopping malls, this is the time for us to camwhore at somewhere else, i.e the age-old Butterworth station.
  5. We can also have our supper/breakfast at the cafe coach in the middle of the train. Oh, what a moment…

Lessons learned

  1. Sometimes, you can see a mother can’t sleep well because she needs to make sure her child in a deep sleep and does not feel the coldness of the aircond. There are times when the air-conditioner malfunctioned, and you can see how a parent struggles to keep off the heat from the child.
  2. The coaches are not really in tip-top condition. Some of them are used throughout the decades. This makes us realize how ‘tak ada duit’ KTM is. They have suffered few consecutive losses.
  3. For months I have been wondering why the KTM staff wears the RM1 logo. Is it because they charge you RM 1 for their services? NO.
  4. I nearly shed my tears when I surfed the net in my home and read in KTM’s website: Their aim is to earn RM1 profit this year.
  5. What touched me most is throughout my experience of using KTM trains to go back home, I’m so amazed with their astounding level of hospitality and politeness. They even wake us up if we are few minutes away from our destination. (It is not stated in their ticket that they should wake us up anyway).
Slogan: “Jom Balik Kampung, because going home together is fun”.

What is flexible committee

Flexible committee is one of the elements under ‘MORE Flexibility’ aspect. The main goal of having flexible committees is to give everyone a chance to involve in every ATUSA-organized activities.

For example, if  a group of ATUSA members wants to lead a recreational trip to Kuala Lumpur, they can form their own committee and choose their leader for that particular activity.

Flexible committee also applies to some of the events organized by ATUSA. We want to reach all kinds of people, therefore it is important for us to have as many participants as possible in our activities.

MORE Enjoyment

Can ATUSA promise more fun to its members? Yes. We will strive hard in order to make ATUSA a better association for all of you. With more people’s involvement, be assured that you will enjoy being one of the members of ATUSA.

MORE Trips

  1. I see there are many benefits that we can reap from having trips.
  2. Besides promoting unity among the members, trips also enable us to understand our country better.
  3. There are multiple kinds of trips we can organize.
  4. Charity visit – visits to the orphanage and old-folks homes. I don’t want to promise anything here, but it is a good thing also if we can bring some prominent personalities to carry out the activities with us. DSC00131  DSC00129
  5. I went to Pusat Jagaan Kanak-kanak Taman Megah last semester, and I found that the activity really touched my heart because it makes me thankful of what I have now. Doing activities with them is fun and exciting. Actually, many people want to join such activities but they do not have the chance because of the limited places available. So, with my flexible committee approach, I hope such activities will be easier to organize and we can have more enjoyment and educating ourselves and people around us.
  6. Awareness campaign – I like this idea. A friend of mine suggested this to me few months ago and I found that is interesting to be carried out. We can go somewhere and help to instill awareness among people. For example, can go to a crowded area such as around Bukit Bintang and give out pamphlet/flyers to people about the importance of taking care of people’s safety. We can still have fun while we contribute towards the society.
  7. Visit Malaysia trips – There are some of us who have never gone to the heart of Kuala Lumpur in his life before he come to INTEC. DSC01122 DSC01133DSC01149
  8. That is why we need tour guides (preferably someone who lives around that area) to help us figure out what Malaysia has in Kuala Lumpur, other than Suria KLCC, Midvalley, Pavilion, Berjaya Times Square and Low Yat Plaza. Same goes to other areas such as Malacca, Kuala Selangor, Ipoh etc. It will be more fun and educating if we can have Malaccans bringing us to Malacca and show us what they have there. Definitely we have something to be shared about our beloved country with Americans once we meet them.
  9. Food Hunt trips – Craving for something special? We can have Food Hunt trips often.DSC01126 DSC01164 DSC01158
  10. The rules are simple. Bring some money, and gather at a certain place before we begin our hunt. Some pictures of the food hunt trips that we have done are published in my Facebook photo album.
  11. There are many of us who like to go for trips, and we will help you to organize them! As long as we still follow UiTM rules, it is easy for us to get free transportation, and maybe some money allocation from the management!
  12. So...who will be the organizer?
  13. There are some trips that will be organized directly under ATUSA, and if you feel like you want to add more, feel free to do so. We will help you.
  14. By using this approach, many people will get the chance to instill their leadership qualities. We can also unleash the capability of ATUSA members.

MORE Connectivity

In order to keep ATUSA in the heart of its members, we know that there is a need to have a strong ‘connection’ between the members and ATUSA committee.

Therefore, we have outlined several steps to be taken in order to maintain the strong bond between ATUSA committee and ATUSA members.

  1. Facebook - We will use Facebook extensively for feedback and discussion purposes.
  2. Website - We will also set up a website for the purpose of informing the members about every ATUSA update.
  3. Meet real people - The ideas of connectivity does not mean we should connect in virtual means alone. Instead, we should connect ourselves to ATUSA and its members in real life. This can be achieved by organizing events that we can join together.

Don’t worry, you’ll be up-to-date with ATUSA activities and never missed out anything. A strong collaboration between IT bureau and Promotion bureau will keep us engaged with ATUSA, all the time.

MORE Flexibility

Goal: To make ATUSA a dynamic and flexible association. We believe that a dynamic and flexible association will function better and has the ability to cater the needs of people.

1. Flexible committee selection – Since there will be a lot of activities to be organized soon, surely ATUSA will need a lot of participation from its members.

2. By using this approach, every ATUSA member will have the chance to become part of something big. Of course, we will never leave you alone in this case. ATUSA HiCom members will guide you throughout the process, such as transportation and logistics.

3. Everyone can participate in every event organized. You can plan an event, form your own committee for that particular event, and you will get an unforgettable experience while unleashing your hidden capability.
